My name is De Waele Danny,I started collecting African art from Congo in 1985.I live in Belgium and as you surely know Congo was a Belgian colonie until 1960.Very soon it became a real passion taking most of my time.Many tribal objects from Congo found there way to Belgium through missionaries,schools,Belgians working in Congo,etc...I'm interested in all tribal objects from Congo:statues,masks,etnographic objects,combs,textiles,baskets,musical instruments,jewels,ivory,books,old postcards and last but not least shields and arms."

WELCOME TO THE FORUM! WE ARE ALWAYS GLAD TO ADD ANOTHER MEMBER AND GAIN THE KNOWLEGE THEY BRING REGARDLESS OF HOW LONG THEY HAVE BEEN COLLECTING. Lately i'm into Songye and Songye related weapons.
I was very pleased to find this one last summer and I wonder if there're simular ones around???

Very ornate, am I right in thinking that the handle is wooden with copper sheet overlay?

You are right like most/all Songye axes the shaft is wood with copper overlay....they also exist with snake or lizzard skin but these are younger ones.....
