			Hello,

only want to save the pictures from this palitai from Mentawai for enjoy and later reference. It was offered some time ago by ebay but wasn't sold. Regards, Detlef |

I think it is a later "interpretation" based on the blade quality, blade shape, size etc.

I am positive that it is not antique. If it is later and made for local use or if it is made for collectors is harder to tell. I lean towards the last alternative. The old palitai in museums and old collections have very good quality blades and are usually larger in size. I also suspect that the feathers etc. are attached to pimp it up. You can compare the features yourself if you check either the Leiden or Tropen online databases. They both have several palitai in their collections. Michael |

I agree with Michael; some sort of quite late conqoction. May be authentic as in used by the Mentawai (in 1970's or so?), but not antique. As I have owned a genuine antique one some time ago I hardly recognize this as being a palitai. Usually they are more reddish in color, scabbard is more straight and the projection at the handle-end had a smooth curve with -as this somewhat has- a 'ridge' in the middle. I dont recall having still pictures of it in my documents. So you can sleep tight again Detlef; no need to remorse over this missed chance of this ebay "palitai"! Greets Wouter |

			Thank you all for comment!

So it was very useful to bring up this thread. I was sceptical by the blade, maybe this and the high price was the reason why I don't bid. You are correct Michael, the blades from the Leiden musem have much better blades. Regards, Detlef |
