Hello,
Just bought his old Sikin from someone who's great grandfather fought in Atjeh before 1900. The scabbard mouth is missing. The hilt is : hulu tumpanng " and so far I have never seen this type hilt with a scabbard that has a loose scabbardmouth. Any suggestions to what type of scabbard mouth could have been fitted in the past ? Best regards, Willem |

Nice find!
Probably the ivory version, not the horn, based on that it was removed. Michael |

They remember everything and are pretty revengeful (remember the ROLO advert ? ![]() ![]() Michael, Good thinking about the ivory. Indeed in case of horn it would probably not be missing. My question was raised because in the books I never see the ivory mouth pieces combined with this specific hilt form. All sikins with ivory mouthpiese that I have seen were in the combination that Michael shows in his picture and sometimes with the Hulu rumpung. Ps. Any other forumite with picture of ivory mouthpieces ? |

Michael,
So far I have only seen the ivory cross pieces with sikins that have a hulu peusangan (like yours and some of my pieces). So that would bring up the question if this scabbard had a ivory cross piece does this sikin belong to the scabbard? Just a thought. Regards, Erik Quote:

Dear Erik,
I could not find the correct 'hulu' name earlier today. But indeed uptill now I only saw ivory combined with hulu peusangang and hulu rumpung. Never with hulu tumpang as this piece suggest. However, and that is why I already made the picture with the other blade, this blade is very narrow and long compared to any other sikins I have seen. It really fits the scabbard like a glove. (a bit of a broken glove ![]() And therefore also my request here. I am looking for sikins with Hulu tumpang and an ivory scabbard mouth ? Anyone ? Best regards, Willem |

I have seen it on a few regular sikin panjang-scabbards.
Unfortunately I can't publish my personal reference pictures from private collections here but Artzi has a couple of "public" examples: http://www.oriental-arms.com/photos.php?id=35 http://www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=2621 http://www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=2335 http://www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=2211 http://www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=2962 http://www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=2236 Michael |

Thanks Michael,
You are fast ![]() How could I forget to check Artzi's website... ![]() Only one that resembles my hulu type :http://www.oriental-arms.com/photos.php?id=2335 And one very interesting type of hulu that looks somewhere inbetween hulu tumpang and hulu peusangang : http://www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=2236 thanks for the info. Strange by the way that often this ivory mouthpiece is not combined with gold on the handles. in my opinion these materials both could indicate wealth and status. |

Willem,
I just tried some mind-reading... Actually I find this hilt most interesting of the samples http://www.oriental-arms.com/photos.php?id=2962 I agree that I haven't either seen gold crowns and ivory scabbard mouth as an original combination, which indeed is strange. Michael |
