Looks like an Afghan jezail? Is that the trigger way back on the butt stock? I would guess the lock is Indian? Nice piece.

It is a jezzail for sure, what country, now that is the question. Afghan jezzail were mainly made out of Brown Bess locks captured from the Brits. This one to me looks African. Metal work and engraving does not look from this area. For sure it is pretty old.

This looks like a super piece to me. Not at all unusual with the matchlock ignition, and the trigger is usually placed back towards the butt on these matchlocks due to the simple pivot design. For flintlocks and percussion it is where you would normally expect it to be.
What I think makes this stand gun out from the crowd is the brasswork, most I have seen have been either almost undecorated or the kind of 'wedding gun' decorated with mother of pearl. So this one is a cut above your average jezail, at least in my view. The finer jezails also often have damascus barrels - you could be lucky ![]() |

Wouldn't you know it - there is another with brass in a parallel thread here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6578
Brass work very similar to this one, but with what looks like tower marked lock. |
