Lionsden, you're doing great for a newbie!!! and its always exciting to see things posted.........I'm glad to see interest in Indian weapons too....an incredibly untapped field that is often extremely exciting as we learn more on the weapons.
When things like this venerable khanda come up, it is a fantastic opportunity.
First I would ask you, do you collect Indian, or are you just getting the bug?

This is of course a khanda, and shows every evidence of being 18th century, though they can sometimes move into the 19th...these were very traditional and used over long periods.
The pierced backstraps over the native blade which has the characteristic spatulate tip suggests of course Mahratta provenance from central to western regions, however these moved into Rajput use into the north as well. These are typically extremely highly regarded and with Rajputs and Sikhs, they are revered as key in religious ceremony as well.. It is often hard to judge age, but this could be from earlier in the 18th century.

Naturally I always hope for other observations and views, but wanted to offer my views and congratulations for preserving these important weapons.

i've been visiting this forum for quite a while, but only registered to post recently. it has helped me a lot with things like identification and preservation techniques. congratulations - this is a great place to learn the ropes!

i've been collecting indo persian arms for some time. i'm from a sikh background so this example had a particular connection for me. i've been collecting and am learning the science of how they would be traditionally used in battle.

Now THAT'S a khanda! That piece really speaks to me... Just the kind of weapon that holds a ton of appeal to my eye.

Beautiful piece lionzden. If you ever decide to sell it, I hope you'll give the forumites here first right of refusal.
