[FONT=Times New Roman]I have a dagger with a rhino hilt and a curved knife. The hilt is in the shape of a Lion's head (?) inlaid with ivory. The dagger has a steel guard embossed with silver inlay flower design. Does anyone know where this dagger comes form and how old it is. there is a hole from each nose to each ear (to put cord though?). There are also 2 hholes in the steel know (next to the silver inlay work) any idea what that is for? The rhino horn has a beautiful golden shine, not visible on the photo's, in view of the aptina I assume it is very old. Who can help me?

It does have a number of Indian features.....the zoomorphic hilt looks ....to me ...like a stylised shark (the triangular teeth, pointed 'nose' and shape of the jaw.)

I would place it as from South India and rhino horn. However, it may be late 19th or early 20th century.

The patina of the rhino indicates it is several hundred years old.
Maybe later fitted? Regards, Hielke |
