Hi all,
sharing this barung recently purchased. An old piece, I believe. But I have 2 questions: a) the scabbard's wooden throat area does not have any 'okir.'2) the rattan bindings on the scabbard suggests this is an old piece. Am I right?(newer ones have rattan binding throughout the scabbard?). This one is from what tribe? Regards Yves |

If i am not mistaken the style of the hilt implies it is not particularly old. Of course, it might be a later addition.

I think this is most likely a relatively recent Sulu (Tausug?) barung and sheath. I'm not seeing anything specifically Mindanao. Perhaps dating as early as the 1980s but probably more recent judging from the sheath.
