Kris or Sundang?
I found this Kris/Sundang some weeks ago when in Germany.
It's not the best blade and I haven't had time to turn the hilt etc. But I found the hilt and sheath combo unusual and interesting. There are traces, on both the blade and the sheath, that it originally had one clamp. From where do you think it originates? Michael |

The "thing" is 72 cm/28 1/3" overall and the blade is 51 cm/20".

There is a flat tang present; does that hint of a Philippine origin ?

I'm sort of with Marcokeris on this one - has elements of Sulu and Malay - Kalimantan for me therefore.

Beautiful piece. I thought it might be Sundang Sulu.

These Moro-like keris are typical for Kalimantan. Look in the book by Van Zonneveld for instance. But also in other keris books you see those keris wich looks like a sundang but are described to Kalimantan.

Thanks for all the comments!
There seems to be a concensus on a Borneo (maybe Sabah is more probable than Kalimantan?)/Sulu combination. Newsteel, do you meen Malaysian, Borneo or Sulu when writing Sundang Sulu? Michael |

Judging from the fittings and bulan sabit sampir, probably it could be from northern Borneo. |

Thanks Newsteel,
Wasn't sure of what you meant when calling it a Sundang Sulu. I don't recognise the hilt as being Borneo. Does anyone have any resembling picture as a reference? Michael |
