You are right though, the inspiration DID come from across the channel for this sword.
I was meaning the all brass hanger style hilts so popular on the continent... Brass guards and back-straps were ubiquitous for Infantry and Naval officers of course.... Iron/steel preferred for cavalry and black painted cast and wrought iron for naval cutlasses.
