I would recommend all interested in the complexities of the weapons from West African, Savannah and Sahel to get this book from amazon Warfare in Atlantic Africa, 1500-1800 . It is gently academic and easy to read most of all the author gets across the quality of warfare and weaponry sadly so often assumed undeveloped.
The wool loops on Bills example would suggest an origin outside of a forest environment, unless wool was traded?
