As for appearing in the U.K. consider the several years, I think 1853 to about 1856, that Samuel Colt was in London producing his revolvers. These were popular with many British cavalry officers, and I believe there were at least a couple of these present at the famed charge at Balaklava in 1854. These would have been the .36 cal. M1851's.
