I reposted this with edits and better pictures. This is an early explosive shell/device from the Age of Fighting Sail. It is about the size of a small orange. It could have held black powder and pellets, noxious substances (stink pot) or a flammable substance for ignition on a ship's deck. It is pre-19th century, but the exact dating remains unclear (Chinese and Arabic ceramic grenades date back to the Middle Ages).
