I believe the basic technique is essentially the same: twisted rods of stacked contrasting materials, and is seen as well in some Chinese sabers and in European materials from Celtic to Viking Age. Variation may be seen in how deeply the twisted rod is ground away: herringbone is seen at the periphery and "stars" at the core and in the size and composition of the rods. More on that is
