Hello Robert,

I've handled already quite some of this spoons since a friend of mine has a shop for ethnograhic items from New Guinea and others. This spoons you can find in other forms also in parts of Indonesia and I've had some from Alor in the past. You're correct, this spoons are used for drink but also for eating.
See here: http://www.tribalmania.com/COCSPOONS.htm The spoons in this link are all sold but when this link is against the rules please remove it. Here you can see many more examples: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...ea&FORM=IGRE#a
Difficult to say how old yours may be, when they have been in daily use they will look very soon old. So far I know they are still in use and tribal dealers have bought and still buy them en masse, good business!

Regards,
Detlef
