Thank you, Lee. I appreciate your kind words. One of the things that drew me to this piece was precisely that remarkable journey through history. It began life as an Austrian court weapon, was later repurposed in Ottoman Algiers, and was ultimately recovered after the French capture of the city in 1830. It’s extraordinary how a single object can preserve such a layered historical narrative.
I agree, many older arms undoubtedly have equally compelling stories, but in most cases those stories have simply been lost to time. I feel fortunate that this example has retained so much of its documented history.
