There are some very knowledgeable firearms people on this forum who can add much more to what I have told you. Hopefully, they will weigh in about your rifle. I would just stabilize the rust with WD40 for now and wait for their responses and compare that with any advice that you get from people you contact. It's always good to get a second opinion and even better if you can get a third, fourth or fifth. You have an exceptional piece in exceptional condition. it deserves the best.
