The many versions of Araldite shown in this list I suspect are not so readily available thru hardware outlets but the "handyman" version is. It comes in two versions here in NZ....a quick set (20min) and a 24hr version. PVA is of course the mainstay for wood, and also useful for resticking such things as leather and other fabrics which has come away from scabbards etc.
I have also used in the past a product called Selleys Knead It. Its a Polymer putty system which cures absolutely rock hard and can be filed and shaped to suit what you want. I suppose one could call it a "plastic steel". Available from larger DIY stores.
