That stuff holding the stone in place looks like sinew from the pictures. I did an image search and most of the examples similar to this are attributed as Native American in origin.

I think the blackened areas speak to the age of the Nicker and IMO should they be removed, it would be like refinishing an 18th century piece of furniture. (insert shrug here) ;)

It does look more like a Sapper's sword; handier for chopping thicker stuff than the Machete, I wonder if any came to the U.S. in the aftermath of the Span-AM, war.
