G'day Jim,

Low's nickname was "Beefy".

There is a photo of him with a sword taken in 1854. I don't know if I have permission to share it, so I will hold off posting it. When you zoom in on the...

Thanks Jim,
Here are a couple of the photos of him in Crimea taken by Fenton. In the group photo he is the guy straddling the chair and in the other he is in the middle, lounging in the wheelbarrow....

4th Light Dragoons Regimental Sword

G'day Guys,
This is the 4thLD regimental pattern sword of Lt Col Alexander Low. Low was with the 4thLD in the "Charge of the light brigade". On his return from Crimea in 1856 he ordered this sword...

G'day Jack,
I think your sword is probably older than 1792. There were several Drurys and I would place yours closer to 1780 than 1790. It looks like an infantry officer's hanger of the type that...

Here is a British 1796 infantry officer's sword with a Solingen blade, that isn't marked to Runkel. This one isn't from my collection.
Cheers,

G'day Radboud,
I will back you up that Solingen blade decoration is instantly recognizable. As an example the photo below shows similar decoration on a British 1796 heavy cavalry officers undress...

G'day Jim,
I have also wondered about Masonic connections with some sword decoration from the period.

The 1796 ladder hilt in the comparison photo I posted above was sold in a Wallis and Wallis...

G'day Jim,
I wonder if hilts like mine may have helped inspire whoever came up with the 1796 ladder hilt design?
Cheers,

G'day Jim,

Yes the scrolling bars are basically the same shape and may derive from honeysuckle as well or perhaps both represent something unrelated to honeysuckle? I am not sure who came up with...

G'day Guys,

Jim, "The British Cavalry Sword from 1600" is the title of Charles Martyn's book, not the suggested date for this sword. I think a date of 1770-1780 is about right for my sword....

1780 heavy Cavalry Officer Sword

G'day guys,
I recently added this interesting sword to my collection. I think it dates to around 1770-1780 and would have belonged to a heavy cavalry officer. This is the oldest British sword hilt I...

G'day Joe,
When I said Dutch klewang I was referring only to the blade. As you pointed out the rest looks to be South-East Asian. I am only assuming the blade is European because of the letters...

G'day Guys,
I was lucky to acquire this sword recently. It is a standard 1796 light cavalry trooper's sword maker marked to Osborn. What makes it special is that the scabbard has a silver plaque...

G'day Joe,
Way outside my area of expertise, but the G on the Dutch klewang blade? you posted is part of a larger marking and unrelated to the G stamp used by Osborn. Hope someone else can shed some...

G'day GC,
There is a fair bit of information about Thomas Gill II in Richard Dellar's book "The British Cavalry Sword 1788-1912". He was born in 1744 and died in 1801. According to Richard Dellar,...

G'day GC,
In terms of dating your sword, my best guess would be 1770's. By the 1780's Thomas Gill was marking his swords with his "Warranted Never To Fail" slogan. I have an early Gill sword. I will...

G'day GC,
Radboud is correct that after 1796, crown over number inspection stamps don't correspond to any particular maker. Prior to this they are relatively uncommon, so I don't know for sure, but...

G'day Calien,
Normally I would say take anything engraved on a scabbard after the fact with a grain of salt, but in this case, the portrait shows that at the very least Stepney Cowell did have this...

G'day JT88,
The 11th Hussars also had similar motifs on their scabbard bands and cross guards. I think you can call it "in the style favoured by light cavalry officers", but you can't narrow it down...

He isn't in the 1814 London PO Directory or the 1816 PO Directory. It suggests he may only have been in business between October 1814 and October 1815. I wonder where the comment about...
