The national museum in Chiang Mai is rather small and underfunded, yet they still have some interesting pieces. Photos weren't really allowed but I did manage a quick & dirty pic of these weapons...

With all the different hill tribes in the northern Thailand/golden triangle area, there seem to be a variety of styles. There are many different ethnic groups north of here, the Shan, Akha, Karen,...

Here are pics of some others that I've turned up. The first one is a ceremonial knife, the bone handle is carved with seven images of Phra Pit-da, which literally means "Lord no-see", the Buddha...

We think the handle is bone, it looks a bit too grainy to be ivory, however I'm not sure how to tell for certain. I have couple where I'm pretty sure the handles are ivory, most are bone, and some...

Picked this up a couple of weeks ago in here Chiang Mai. Handle is carved bone, worn smooth from use, knife is 25 cm long, with a nice heft to it. The scabbard is newer, might see if I can get a...

It's interesting to me how some of the carved motifs resemble native American and Canadian art from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Northern Thai priest knife

Now that's I've in Chiang Mai for several months, I'm gradually learning more about this stuff. I like this knife quite a bit. The up-curved handle is an indication that a knife was ceremonial...

Thanks for the info on the image posting. I'm thinking now that this handle is bone, not ivory, if it is a bit more recent than the blade. If it was ivory it would have to be a pretty big piece as...

Hi, I was talking about the top of the handle, rather than the blade. The top of the elephant's head looks to have been stuck in the fire for a moment. The big knife with the large carved ivory...

SE Asia Knife #4 & 5

These last two aren't as special but still interesting, #4 the little silver one because of its very small size. Not a ceremonial knife, a small pocket knife, or maybe for a child or woman to carry? ...
