east african leather shield normally have leather hand grips.

Sumba shields came up in my mind.
But they have a rattan rim, where this shield has the rim made by bending up the leather... :shrug:

I agree that it must be some alloy. Gilded would not last so long on a hilt wrapping imo.

But the overal blade shape / handle shape and indeed some kind of creature on top of the handle are all new to me.
