David, the issue of greneng, or the absence of such, is an interesting one. The example shown here by Lief has some greneng, still visible but seriously worn down. Detlef's example similarly shows...

Exclamation Examination of the tang with X-rays

Today I visited a veterinarian friend who has an X-ray machine. By cranking the machine up to 90kV and 0.5 mA I was able to get some very respectable views of the tang through the silver wrap on the...

Thanks Detlef and Erik. Yes there is certainly some resemblance to a rattan knife as used in Mainland SE Asia. I think kino's example is a variant of thjat style of knife.

My main thought was...

ausjulius, you may be right about northern Burma. There is another group that has used a similar scabbard construction, with aluminum strips around a wooden scabbard, and that is the Hmong/Miao...

Strange knife

This truly unusual knife is unknown to me. It was in an auction that ended today and was decribed as Indonesian. I doubt that attribution. Perhaps southern Asia or mainland SE Asia.

Ideas,...

I can't help you with the mark, but I think the notch is a choil that facilitates sharpening the whole length of the blade.

Marc, the longitudinal fuller runs under the "forte." This suggests to me that part of the repair consisted of a carefully fitted sleeve over the original forte and adjacent blade, then riveted in...

Hi Detlef.

Yes, the sampir could be a later replacement and the horn spacer may have been used to fit the sampir more snugly. There is also evidence of an old band around the mid-scabbard that...

Abu-Mansourah, I agree with Detlef. This piece could be 100 years old—never worn and placed in a drawer or cupboard where it was not subjected to any damage. The amount of oxidation was considerable...

This was a recent purchase online from a British auction house.

It is obviously an archaic Moro kris, with the blade probably being older than the fittings. A very notable feature of the blade is...

I agree with Gavin. The blade appears to be fairly old, but the hilt and sheath are more recent. The blade could be Spanish. The hilt and sheath are likely Mexican.

The pommel resembles an old kakatua style used on barung, which might suggest it had some proximity to Moro groups in its past. The guard looks Tagalog or Visayan. The blade looks fairly crude...
