This is a coteng, and one with a rather good hilt! I like the pendoko. An uncommon form. It may have had a stem at some point in time.

Thanks Detlef for the limks. I must say at the end of those threads, the conclusion is not clear as to where the keris came from. It is just a general agreement that it is North Coast Java.

In...

And to make things interesting, this Tegal keris appeared a few days ago and I was lucky enough to acquire it. Comparing it to the old coteng, the similarities in the sheath form is striking. And it...

I mentioned in another thread my hypothesis that the tajong evolved from Cirebon kerises. Here's an early coteng keris with a sheath that is reminiscent of old Cirebon style. The hilt is probably...

Indeed! I find myself reading the history of Southeast Asia, to better understand the context in which the keris evolved and existed, and it adds immense colour to the collecting of kerises. It is...

Hello Detlef,

Indeed, it looks like some of the kerises from Jensen's book. My understanding is that Banten and Cirebon were founded by the same person, so similarities in style would be within...

Alan, this looks like an 'interpretation' of a foreign keris sheath style, so it could indeed be the only one of its kind. :)

Thanks David. I got a bit rounder, so I guess life shouldn't be that bad :)

Yes, my view was largely based on the wood. It would have to be imported into the Peninsula, and I haven't seen this sort...

Old Cirebon keris

Sharing this keris I bought off ebay recently. Looks like an old Cirebon keris. The original hilt had its nose and face chewed off by mice. I replaced it with a similar hilt from my collection.

I...

The blade looks like Straits...

I doubt this pendoko is made of pure base gold. Too much to spend on a cast pendoko. Likely to be brass which is gilded. At any rate, if it is gilded and it still retains much of the gilding, it...

Thanks for posting pictures! Very good sheath form. And hilt is good too. Seller says the hilt is sterling silver, but it almost looks brassy, or is that gunk?

The blade looks like it has been extensively cleaned in the past already. I don't think it needs any further cleaning now. Probably just oil it a bit.
