Ripoll Miquelet

Hi Dana, what a nice pistol. That lock alone pretty much identifies Ripoll made. A very standard patilla, flat full cock and round notched half cock. IMHO that is what my envious eyes see it.

My 2 cents worth. I agree 100% with K's #33 post. As you said, the man knows his miquelets. :)

I am solidly with Fernando K on this one, that is, this lock is a "stretched" agujeta lock, a type of lock probably born in Brescia, copied in North Africa, may or may not have preceded the classic...

Pasha Rick, as always with the Ottoman stuff, you have dispensed with the "kneedless" misnomer and put things right, IMHO. You say pistol and that is exactly what it is, a pistol, weird to be sure,...

Fernando, as you may suspect, I am not a whiz at posting photos, so this one may be overkill.

Rubens hunter

Greetings, I have been wanting to ask the members what variety of gunlock is pictured in Peter Paul Rubens An Autumn Landscape with a View of Hetsteen circa 1635. I believe it to be an agujeta of...

Rick et al,

Here is an article from an international museum committee site that is certainly germane to the original topic. I really enjoy all Ibrahiim al Balooshi posts and we are truly fortunate...

Fernando K, we certainly agree it is a classic patilla, only on a decidedly sculptured Italian frame. Never seen such a setup, but then, that is the world of the miquelet lock. :D

mystery miquelet

Greetings All,

This lock looks for all the world to be Italian, “alla marchigiana” (“in the Marchesan style” ). Marchesan locks have been often described as “surrealistic”. Hmm, wonder why. What...

Fernando, no need to withdraw your opinion because you are most certainly correct about the decorative crudeness of the hammer. You were talking aesthetics, I was talking functionality. My "crude"...

Hola, Fernandos
The "poor quality" hammer at least strikes the nipple and thus the cap squarely, not something many better (and modern) caplocks always get right. Given decent quality caps, I bet...

Perhaps item number FC159 from https://www.blackleyandson.com/ would be a good start at replacing that top jaw. FC159 sure looks like the broken one and measures 1.437". Just...

Dmitry et al,

I agree, that hole has something to do with a belt hook. Fernando K nailed the makers. Nice pistol at any rate, though that broken top jaw sort of spoils the overall condition....

A quick look in my Dutch firearms books revealed a musket of circa 1640 having a flintlock with the frizzen spring located on the interior of the lock. So perhaps that is the case with...

Dana, perhaps this may be of some help, keeping in mind, of course, terminology is a mine field. From Francis Markham in "Five Decades of Epistles of Warres", London, 1622, Bk. IV, p. 133 refers to...
