Nope: Completely different blade & hilt.

I'd broaden the search range for this piece to all over Southeast (and central?) Asia, too.

Hello Andreas,

Regarding the less dense inclusions inside the pommel: You forgot to flip your red markings when viewing the other side of the pommel. Could you post corrected pics, please?

Dear all,

Most examples on the market these days are results of cultural appropriation for mere business reasons - if not outright fakes (in case claimed being genuine northern Melayu...

Dear all,

Aside from kinda vague pommel similarities obviously based on ergonomics (and a ferrule/bolster style much more widespread including e.g. Indonesia), I fail to see any close relationship...

Hello Yuri,

The blade is coming out nicely! Seems good quality to me.

I don't see much wear and this makes estimating age hard. The Borneo crowd tends to be really conservative with age...

Not my area of expertise, so take with a big lump of salt: This grip section (as well as crossguard) doesn't look neither East Asian nor Himalayan to me.

Any chance, this might be African instead?...

Thanks for clarifying, Detlef!

Actually, I believe the luju alang exhibits a genuine saruek ulat (here made from silver): It seems to have the scales in 3D.

These saruek ulat come in variety of...

Hello Detlef,

The asymmetrical decor found on status gliwang is a different beast IMHO. BTW, it seems to be a mainly ceremonial luju alang (vs the longer peudeueng panjang).

A proper saruek...

Thanks, Martin!

Ok, that should settle it - under magnification it's usually very obvious.

Sure, no full-out polish needed nor advisable - a conservative approach of light touching up...

That's a tough one, Yuri!

The blade seems to have good age and needs some TLC; the later attached chain was probably for hanging the piece on a wall?

Hello Martin,

Yeah, Erik's Luju Alang is a neat piece that went to Bronbeek.

BTW, the saruek ulat is not limited to Gayo origins. It is also commonly found with Luju/Sikin Lapan Sagi which is...

Hello Detlef,

Very tough to tell in the current state - I think you need an exploratory etch.

Often these blade are made from laminated steel.

Hello Detlef,

Yes, that's the lower quality I was referring to; only the basal third (the broadened part next to the blade) might be older (if the material is actually different).

Hello Albert,

The vast majority of keris blades exhibits a 3-layered construction with a central steel layer for holding an edge enclosed by two sheets of pamor. Thus, the pamor can be chosen for...

Hello Detlef,

I'm more leaning towards Bugis-influenced blade from the northern Melayu regions. Hilt & scabbard seem consistent, too.

A blade length of 43cm is definitely in the (very) upper range for Palembang and neighbouring regions.
