Mir Ali ?

Thank you Kwiatek for a valuable suggestion - it had not occurred to me that it might be two words.

As to Mir Ali: There seem to be 2 possibilities.
1) A place name - there is actually a village...

Question Another request for translation...

Kwiatek, I was impressed by your reading of General Cunningham. I can struggle through printed Arabic lettering, but handwriting floors me.

It took me a loooong time to work out that you were (of...

Shooting old guns

"1. I am fascinated by scientific exploration of the shooting of these weapons

2. I am highly cautious because of the aging of metals. "

I agree with both points, but they are not in...

Some answers to reasonable questions

1) Can we use antique guns?

2) Is it dangerous to shoot with antique guns?

Good morning everybody!

I shall endeavour to answer the above questions in a...

The contributor of post #15 is entitled to have an opinion.

He is, however, not entitled to express that opinion rudely, with unfounded assumptions and personal denigration.

Recoil

Forget the ímplausible stuff about having the butt under the armpit. It seems that no-one has ever produced a photo or an eye-witness account to substantiate this theory. You hold it just like any...

"A bit of water on the woodwork won't matter, ..."

My worry would rather be about getting water between the barrel and the stock. Where it would start to rust and be inaccessible.

"...but if...

Hard residue

"Are you sure its not just old hardened black powder residue?? Try scrubbing with boiling water. "

Could well be rock-hard BP residue. About a century old!

I'll give hot water a try. But...

Tar-like residue

Whatever it is, it's resistant to everything that I dare to put down the barrel!

I think the barrel might be some kind of damast, which is why I would not like to use aggressive chemicals.

It's heavy

The jezail weighs in at a touch under 6 kilograms! With the centre of gravity being about 76 cm out from your shoulder, quite impractical for unsupported shooting. This must be thought of as a kind...

Frontier Arithmetic

Jim, I must confess that this thread was the inspiration to get out and do it.

After weeks of Covid frustration, I had a great session at the range, shooting 3 extremes:

The oldest - Rouma...

OK, got the photos attached, but I don't know how to get them in line, which would be better for understanding.

Shooting a jezail rifle

OK, it took a long time, thanks to Covid range restrictions etc.

But I did it.

This is the first shot (after a century or so) with my Jezail rifle (not smoothbore!). Just a functional test,...

Spangenberg et Spangenberg ?

Thanks Corrado for a very interesting suggestion. My photo wasn't very good, as one can't see that the pan is also facetted.

I find dozens of Spangenbergs (or should that be Spangeberge?) in...

Flint lock by unknown maker S et S

Not S & S but S et S. Ought to be French, one might think. But I cannot find a single S et S in Stöckel. S and S is plentiful - in fact, too many to make a plausible identification. Anyway, it was...

Slimline pistol

That is an extraordinary design. The slimmest pistol I have ever seen. The zig-zag top arm of the frizzen spring is a delight to look at!

Shooting a jezail

OK, don't all laugh, but I'm seriously considering acquiring a jezail, to see how it shoots.

Has anyone out there actually seriously fired one of these, as a target rifle?

Hoping to get some...

Unit, not name

The No. 42 was necessary because there were at least 41 others.
Not even the wildest pistol fan would have 42 weapons with his initials marked!
So if it was a personal weapon and GG were his...

Could DUNAN be a form of the name DUNANT or DUNAND ???

There were several DUNANT in Geneva in the period 1586-1653 (see Stoeckel).

Sometimes photos are misleading..

..as in this case.

Corrado, I must revise my opinion in favour of your gun.

The blurred photos in the first post washed out the microscopic surface irregularities in the lock plate and cock,...

Bern 1804 Cantonal Ordnance musket

By popular demand ... (Fernando and Pukka)

When I acquired this musket it was a real puzzler. It is of the generic Charleville style, but with a couple of with very unusual features. The front...

P.S. Pukka, I altered the photos exactly as you described - even before you posted. Mind reading or what?
