I think what Hisham is hinting at, is whether the shirt is African or adapted in Africa from an earlier source. There are a few examples of Ottoman helmets and shirts that have been adapted and...

African Galleries in the BM

Poor images from a shaky hand, late for a meeting in a dark room (3 excuses in one sentence!)

Very sorry for the delay.
Looking at it now, I have doubts of the 16thC attribution, due to the crude fullers. Look forward to other opinions.

It isnt my field, but I am pretty sure this is the real thing, and not 19thC. I couldnt get close to it, but it had all the asthetics of an old sword.
I think I will have to post the...

16thC African Sword

I thought I knew the London collections quite well, but know I tend to visit the same pieces and ignore the fields that dont necessarily interest me. So, I had never been to the African galleries in...

This one was owned by a friend of mine. European without a doubt. You cant see the decoration on the side-guards, but 100% not Eastern, and 100% never made to be used in a battle.

Hi Michal,
I would love to have heard your talk, as it is a subject that is so closely related to 'Oriental' arms, and yet so easily roped under the Western banner and bypassed. Also, its a subject...

The paper I was refering to in that post was not on wootz, but on Persian metalwork as a whole. But, the main criteria of the author was to challenge assumptions, and so this should also...
