I don't really have much to add here and i am basically in agreement with Alan Milandro and Detlef.
The hilt is indeed out-of-culture, but i'm not sure it is a Western design. Something about it...

I understand what you mean about restorations that end up costing many times more than the items themselves. That is why many of us endeavour to learn how to do these restorations ourselves. But...

I pretty much agree with Milandro here. You have a bit of an advantage living in The Netherlands. While the basic cleaning of keris blades is relatively easy, restaining with warangan is a more...

Geoffrey, as mentioned, there are numerous threads in our archives that cover the cleaning of keris. Here in one that is pretty good, but you may want to search our archives for "keris maintenance"...

Thanks André. These are interesting, but i am confused about some of their methods.
In the first video they are cleaning the keris with the hilt attached, which seems very odd to me. I suppose...

Thanks for the info regarding colour and that makes some sense. Unfortunately i don't have the hilt in hand, but i will ask my friend about the weight/density of the wood. I would image that...

Yes, this blade is very utilitarian, but i am not convinced it is necessarily dressed for sale to tourists. I don't know why it did not immediately come to mind, but this blade is a very similar...

Obviously it is no master carving, but can you place this in any time period. My...

Well that's a nice old soldier. I think it is safe to say that it is much older than the acquisition date. ;) It has, of course, seen better days, but to my eye this is a blade that was forged to a...

Bali Hilt ID???

Hi Folks! A good friend of mine just acquired this polychromed Balinese hilt for the price of a taco in, of all places, a Central Mexican marketplace. I do realize that togogan Bali hilts are often...

As for the figure figure in the hilt, often figures that are crouching like this are related to ancestors. The bird face behind the head appears to be a Garuda Mungkur, a protective figure. Tiuk...

I'm not...

I don't know of any evidence that would support the use of the panjang as a slashing weapon, nor do i believe you are likely to find any videos showing it used as a weapon. I have heard the story...

I have seen Tajong hilts on panjang blades before, but as far as i know this is not a traditionally acceptable combination. The keris panjang you show here is a rather recent blade i think.
