Actually, I think this is someone's attempt (poorly done) at a copy of
the Topkapi (sp?) dagger. Still definitely the gaudiest I've seen.

From a chemical standpoint, ferric chloride is a pretty strong etchant, maybe (???) you are over etching. Might try a lighter solution like lemon juice or vinegar. Just a thought.

I've had several opinel, fine knives, but I've found them a bit fat and bulky
for carry. Mostly around the homestead, I carry either an old rebuilt Broderna Jonsson or a customized Jarvenpaa puukko....

The tang has probably rusted itself into the wood of the tsuka (handle).
