Here is the wooden pole, for those interested (120cm).
I had a closer look and metuk seems indeed mechanically fitted.

Thanks Kai, Alan & Rick!
The pole is a simple wooden stick, I guess same age as the scabbard. I’ll make a picture tomorrow in daylight. The methuk doesn’t seem to be a separate piece.
Curious about...

Tombak spearhead

I bought this tombak spearhead out of curiosity (29 cm).
Was mounted on a simple wooden stick (total length ca. 150 cm).

Not my region of interest, but I did some homework.
Could be Javanese?...

Nimcha markings

Mahdist sword calligraphy

I recently bought this Mahdist blade, cheap and rather out of interest.

Blade measures 70cm, forged but is rather weak.
But than again, these were not used to fight but serve a talismanic...

A great 18th century shamshir! Congrats!
Did you check the handle/translucency? Could be rhino..
Gold inlay, often verses of the Quran or poetry, probably done later (Syria?).

Indeed from the KONDA or neigboring tribes in Congo.
I agree it isn't very old, relatively weak blade which is not forged.
Might be from around 1950, but probably slightly younger.

I asked a friend for a translation of the mei/signature.

The mei reads "Katsukuni" (Darani school), a Shinto smith who lived in Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture). Thus dating from the period 1600-1764.

Charles is right that it isn't a good quality Ovambo knife. Seems to show some signs of use, but will probably be younger than I initially wrote. During the 50s and especially the 60s-70s quality...
