somewhat close but definitely no cigar

It looks like the guy who made this thing was inspired in his dreams by a British Pattern 1907 bayonet but didn't have enough steel to make it long enough. And needless to say lacked the equipment...

source?

I'm not familiar with the UK book trade, so does this Mr Watson have an online retailing site? I tried to Google him and I get a David Watson who's the author of a number of books that mix religion ...

Perhaps the moderator was not aware that the auction had closed before you posted it. I understand that it is alright to post about auctions already dead and gone, not live upcoming ones.

Looks like a recently-assembled composite to me. There is nothing remotely schiavona-ish (schiavonesque? schiavonoid?) about the basket guard. The fit of guard to blade looks clumsy. The peening...

It is likely that folding knives such as this type were a Western concept, perhaps first brought to China by the Portuguese who were the first Europeans to reach China in significant numbers as early...

I have had the chance to restore a few Korean single edged blades over the years and the appearance of the tangs is pretty consistent with this knife. They lack the more careful shaping, and the...

Despite the Japanese-ish touches throughout, it's one of those "close but no cigar" situations. It's definitely an old piece and not some latter-day fantasy. Looking at the materials, the overall...

Thanks, Lee. You confirmed my initial suspicion about color difference between the components. I agree that the scabbard finish and the metal hardware are not new, they have some age though not...

Another question

Lee, I know that photos can sometimes deceive when it comes to color and tone when camera angle and ambient lighting come into play. With the piece in your hands, do you notice any difference in...

more on the scabbard fittings

Another thing about this set of metal hardware that's a bit funny -- the chape has a chased border with a decorative curlicue at the apex. The throat and two bands lack any border. This runs...

A most interesting saber. The blade is definitely old, though without having it in hand I'd be hesitant to say whether late 17th, 18th, or turn of 19th. The tunkou doesn't look stylistically quite...

This sword has a truly remarkable hilt for its type. Not only is the carving exceptional, but the form is a far cry from the typical "gatormouth" with open jaws. The aesthetics of the decoration is...
