Tboli kefilan
Wildwolberine,
That’s a nice and very old Tboli kefilan. Terrific old scabbard as well, which I would identify as Blaan. Nice pick up and thanks for sharing.
Best,
Craig

Searching for two specific Tboli swords
Hello,
The two swords in the photos below were sold at auction relatively recently. One in April 2021, the other in February 2023. I obviously missed them both.
On the slight chance that a...

Hi Jeff,
Weapons like those you noted made their way to the mountains in a variety of ways. Throughout the lowlands and less rural areas, these weapons were not rare. While the local Tboli people...

Hello David,
Indeed ‘posed’ is a more appropriate term and I have edited my original post.
For the Tboli man, carrying a weapon of some sort would certainly have been a regular occurrence....

Tboli sudeng - vintage photo
Here is another photo taken on the same day.
At first I thought the man near the middle might be the same man above. However while the scabbard looks similar, his hat is different and he isn’t...

Tboli sudeng - vintage photo
Hello Ian & Oliver,
Thanks for the comments.
To be sure, the photo is definitely from 1970. In fact I think it's important to note that photos of the Tboli from this era are very rare. The...

Tboli sudeng
Correct, it’s definitely Moro.
However as noted, these are often prized and owned by Tboli datus. This piece is specifically owned by the family of a late Tboli datu. The Tboli call this type...

Tboli Sudeng - input please
Hello,
The Tboli prize these old Moro swords and call them “sudeng”. My knowledge of these Moro pieces is rather limited and so I’m hoping to gain as much education as I can from the members...

Blaan
Hello Yves,
I think the main issue is that early misspellings of the name Blaan created mispronunciations which were always considered to be derogatory by the Blaans. As a minority indigenous...

Blaan
Hello,
I'll let others weigh in with their opinions on the sword and hilt, but will note that the scabbard appears to be a nicely carved Blaan piece.
I think it's important to use the word...

I would agree with tanaruz, that dagmay is a good possibiity for the textile on this scabbard. Good call. Mandaya weaves are very distinctive and when seen on their own are quite easily identified...

I personally don't think much information can be gathered from anything attached to a Tboli hilt - chains, beads, bells, etc. They are obviously easy to attach and detach any time. Traditionally,...

Tboli
Hello Ian & Xas,
In terms of the textile, it's abaca but doesn't appear Tboli. It actually looks like Subanen. I'd be interested in seeing what's underneath the textile and if the scabbard has...
