I recently bought this in a shop with militairy antiques.
No provenance, no info. Both me and the seller think it is borneo, but without an original handle or scabbard it makes me wonder what it looked like before. Anyone who has a similar blade or picture of such a blade ? Length of the blade is 47 cms without the handle. The protruding piece at the base is 3 cms |
I WOULD NOT CALL THIS A MANDAU i AM SURE IT IS SOMETHING ELSE. UNFORTUNATELY I DON'T KNOW WHAT BUT I SUSPECT THE MEMBERS WHO SPECIALIZE IN THESE WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHAT IT IS.
IT LOOKS LIKE A VERY WELL MADE OLD BLADE AND COULD BE FROM BORNEO, MALAYSIA OR INDONESIA  A VERY NICE BLADE PERHAPS YOU CAN FIND A PROPER HANDLE AND SCABBARD FOR IT. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIND SOME INFO IN VAN ZONNEVELD'S, TRADITIONAL WEAPONS BOOK. CONGRADULATIONS :D |

probably reshaped into Batak blade ? It looks like a mix between sikin and kalasan. |
It Looks to me that they try to imitate an kris below the Handle

Hello Willem,
Seems to be an Pedang (type 3 in AvZ) blade. Ethnic Malay? Regards, Kai |
I also think it's from Sumatra and has a replaced handle.
Really strange protrusion? Usually it looks more like the pedang III, like Kai indicated. Michael |
Thanks all for the expertise.
Sumatran blade. restoring (other hilt)is not really helpfull I think. Best regards, Willem |
