Bontok Words pertaining to weapons
 

Hello,

I compilled a list of Bontok words pertaining to indigenous and non-indigenous weapons. I hope members in the forum will find them useful.

Spear
Types of spears:
•Tofai, Tufay, Sokod – spear (in general)
•Falfeg, Falfog – spear with a pair of downward pointing barbs; tang has a four-sided cross-section
•Pinilipo – similar to a Falfeg but the tang has a round cross-section
•Fangkau – spear with leaf-shaped head, no barbs, and made of metal or hard bamboo
•Kayang, Kaiang – spear with a pair of flaring barbs
•Tolpop – spear with a wooden (not metal) point
•Sinalawidan, Sinalawitan, Sinakad, Tinalantan – spear with multiple pairs of barbs
•Kinalolotan – spear with a metal butt cap
•Sipak, Shipak – spearhead with an asymmetrical pair of barbs

Raw materials for making spears:
•Kasatan - a dark-colored wood used for spear shafts
•Alimus – an odorous tree whose wood is used for making spear shafts
•O-i, Wue - Rattan
•Fananga - Red rattan
•Going - Yellow rattan

Parts of a spear:
•Tokno – the rattan plait found on some axes and spear shafts
•Sosog, Shoshok - lower part of a spear shaft with the butt cap
•Sokod – shaft of a spear; also, shaft of a spear that is used as a staff/walking cane
•Salawit, Salawid – the barb of a spear
•Odso – pointed end of the blade or spearhead
•Oteng – the tang of the spearhead
•Kalolot – metal ferrule
•Kinasil – Bejuco (rattan) plait around the upper end to hold the tang into the shaft; Kinasil also refers to a kind of plaiting

Axe
Types of axes:
•Axe – Alewa (an Ilokano loan-word)
•Igorot head axe – Pinnang
•Battle axe of the Tucucan - Kaman
•Axe used for heavy work – Wasai, Wasay
•Axe of the Kalinga type (i.e. with a crescent-shaped blade) – Sineluwekan

Parts of a non-Wasai axe (e.g. Sineluwekan axe):
•The sharp upper point of an axe head – Otok
•The sharpened blade of an axe head - Pinangash
•The head of an axe - Olwan
•The handle or haft of an axe – Pakacha, Pakatja or Palek
•The long tail of an axe head – Pawit
•The ferrule on the upper end of an axe handle or haft – Kalolut, Kalolot
•The ferrule on the lower end of an axe handle or haft – Paneknakan, Tengfa, Signalan
•Rings of Bejuco functioning as ferrule – Kasil, Kinasil, Sineluekan

Parts of a Wasai axe:
•The blade – Pinangash, Saka
•The handle or haft – Pakacha, Pakatja or Palek
•The tail of the blade – Pawit
•The ferrule on the upper end of an axe handle or haft – Kalolut, Kalolot
•The ferrule on the lower end of an axe handle or haft – Paneknakan, Tengfa, Signalan
•Rings of Bejuco functioning as ferrule – Kasil, Kinasil, Sineluekan

Shield
•Shield – Kaniyab, Kalasay, Kalasag ( an Ilokano loan-word)

Parts of the shield:
•The three protrusions on the upper part of the shield – Sakingau
•The semi-circular shape at the lower part of the shield – Sakengyad
•The rattan ties across the shield functioning as reinforcement – Fakolong or Lapad si Kaniyab
•The front center or navel of the shield – Longalong si Kaniyab
•Handle – Pangignanan
•Hole or carved depression for accommodating the hand - Tongalon

Sword – Fadyok

Knife and Sheath
•Knife or the blade of a knife – Kipan
•A large knife or bolo – Kampila
•Handle or haft of a knife – Palek
•Edge of a knife – Topek
•Back (non-edged) portion of the blade – Tjalik
•Point of the blade or knife – Odso
•Belt on which the knife hangs – Sangkitan, which is ornamented with white pieces of shell (Kolangad si Opud)
•Sheath of a knife or bolo – Fai si Kampila

Bow and Arrow – Pantulai, Bandolay (an Ilokano loan-word).
