Siwai/Siwah/Sewar dagger 19th Century ?
This dagger claimed to be 19th ct.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA:IT&ih=002 Any comments ? The blade looks rather poor to me compared with the scabbard etc. |
What is interesting is that this seller had a few similar pieces all with the same quality blade and they all look like they came from the same shop? Some of the hilts seem ok but I would not want to take a chance since I am not that familar with these types of knives.

Same feeling here about the blades and the pieces. A lot of this piece is new-looking and artificially aged. |
Not to mention CITES .
A thousand dollar gamble . Silver work looks pretty nice; the rest ... not so much . |
These look very much composite to me, perhaps even a blend of old and (very)new parts. The silver work in particular looks very recent, and when there is no patination around such work, especially on ivory hilts among some of the seller's other offerings, it makes me even more convinced it is newer work.

The silver work on this one seems especially new - the crown ferrule was a dead give-away to me. What also threw me off was the engraving - all of the best nobility pieces I have seen (or in pictures) have been chased or repoussed, not engraved.

Thanks, I also got suspicious by someone offering so much pieces of 'high' quality that can still be found among the nobles on Sumatra.
Indonesia is becomming the new China I guess.... |
