Dagger I.D. please.
 

Hi,
Got this recently and would like your ideas. Length 8 3/4 inches, blade 5 inches, the usual where? what? and when? Bone handle with full tang blade, looks quite utility, handles nicely and appears well used. The over large leather loop,12 1/2 inches, on the sheath has me a wee bit perplexed, attached to a waist belt and it would be down mid thigh, this seems somewhat improbable therefore how would it be worn? Thanks in advance to any and all replies.

Could the leather loop be used as a shoulder 'holster' ?

Perhaps I am infected with the Afghan fever, but it does look Afghan to me: look at the bolster.

Tried your idea re shoulder holster, the loop is just too small to work with any degree of ease or usefulness the leather strip that would appear to have been used to stop the knife falling out the sheath, which is through both straps, effectively shortens the loop by a couple of inches making matters worse, it's a nice idea but unfortunately not practical. Thanks anyway.

I agree with Ariel. The entire blade root and bolster assemblage recalls Khybers and chooras, also the stepped blade back with transverse lines seems Central Asian.

I agree definatly Muslim design, but to my eye a Balkan or Turkish area kard would seem possible?

Is the strap definatly original to the sheath?

Spiral good point, looking again I think it is almost certain that the strap is not original to the scabbard, different colours and the scabbard was not designed to accept the square metal ring that marries them together having said that the strap is definitely hand cut and hand sewn. There appears to be no obvious suspension point original to the scabbard. Hope this helps.

Well, the bolster sure looks Afghani as do the brass liners between the tang and the hilt scales but the file work and jimping on the spine looks the same as my khodmi/bou saadi blades. The graving on the side of the blade is reminiscent of those north African pieces also.

Appears to be a bit of a cross cultural enigma, I did try to match it with images on the net but it didn't fit into any of the usual pigeon holes. It is sharp and seems well used and has been looked after so it was a useful tool to someone but where and when?
