Help please
 

The two knives pictured below are from the estate of a dear friend. I am trying to help his widow appraise his effects. Can anyone please help me identify these pieces and give her a general sense of their value. The blades on each do appear to be wootz.

A jambiya and a kard perhaps. You can find examples of both on Artzi's site and I have always felt his prices were fair. Appraisals are not allowed on the forum but some members may choose to PM you about them. They look very nice

Yes I agree - both are jambiya and a kard and both from Persia. Unusual forms of these and very nice. Both have ivory hilts. The jambiya looks to have copper mounts, but they may have been gilded at one time.

Isn't it Khanjar instead of jambiya?
And, BTW, its scabbard is bizarre: so tastelessly ornate...

Isn't this form only known as Jambiya on the Arabian Peninsula; everywhere else it is called Kanjar?
This looks, to my uneducated eye like Indian work.

Jambiya/Khanjar/Khanjarli/hancer, I have never been too clear on the division, Arzi calls some indian knives on his site Khanjar. I have also heard that only in Saudi is the term Jambiya used but I could be way off base on that. Again from memory and I could be way off. Isn't Jambiya an arab term and Khanjar farsi ?

It is a kanjar and a kard. kanjar is a arabic word it means dagger. and yes jambiya's are from Saudi
