Strange Looking Machete
3 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I just picked up this strange looking machete and knife. Both are supposed to be from the Philippines. The guard on the machete looks Japanese to me. The machete measures 20" and the blade measures 14 1/2". Any thoughts on this from anyone? |
The knife is from Luzon (Philippines), perhaps Ilocano in origin, but the hilt is quite damaged and it is hard to tell where in Luzon it may have been from.
The machete does not look Philippine. Possibly Chinese as you suggest. Ian. |
Ian,
Thank you for your reply. The machete is one of those things that looks so familiar but you just can't seem to place it. I know I have seen one like it somewhere but just can't remember where it was. It does look like it could be Chinese or maybe Japanese. Maybe someone else might have an idea on where it is from. Robert |

Here are more pictures and the dimensions. I hope someone can help identify this. Guard and fittings are brass, blade looks to be hand forged and the grip is wood. Comments and information are welcomed.
Total length 20-1/4" Blade length 15" Blade width at guard 1-1/2" Blade width at widest 3-7/16" Blade at thickest 5/16" Length of cutting edge 12-1/4" Hilt 5-1/4" |
I agree with everyone that the blade on this has the same general shape as a naga dao but on every picture of a dao that I have found the blade has been sharpened from the hilt to the tip of the blade. Where as on this blade the sharpened edge does not start until 2-3/4" beyond the guard.
