Germanic or not?

Unknown dagger for identification.

Unknown dagger for identification. I have had this dagger in my possession for more than 20 years but I'll never been able to identify it. The seller at the time indicated that it is a Germanic dagger from the 1st or 2nd century AD. The dagger does indeed show characteristics of the earlier Roman Pugio dagger, but it also different. The grip is round which is very strange for the time period and the pommel is richly decorated with glass or stone. In addition, I have never been able to find this type of pommel. Does anyone recognize this type of dagger and is it indeed authentic or unfortunately a forgery.

Hello JohnO,

Welcome to the Ethnographic Forum. This one relates to a European weapon and rightfully belongs in the European Forum. You are more likely to get a thorough opinion over there, so I'm transferring your thread to that Forum.

Regards, Ian.

Have you tried to identify the pommel stone? A jeweler should be able to tell you what it is. Also, it looks more like a sword relic with an eroded blade than a dagger. What is the point of balance on this?

The point of balance is just behind the crossguard. I haven't the stone tested at a jeweler yet, but this is a good plan if no one can identify this dagger
