Another mid 20th Century Indian Kukri?
3 Attachment(s)
Picked up by my Uncle when in the Himalayas in the late 1970s. Handle seems to be bone? Looks fairly crude. Is this another North Indian made kukri?
Thanks, M. |
Looks Nepalese to me.

Love that bone grip and the smoothly curved spine. Nice One. Probably a 'villager' Kami who knows what he is doing... |
Thanks for the responses, chaps. I’ll get some more shots and dimension up. The “pommel” looks to be brass.
|
At first glance I thought the grip was horn; is it confirmed to be bone?
|
Handle is 110 mm, blade 290 mm.
Yes, you are right, it is horn - not bone, my error - I’ll ask my Dad if he knows what type. |

Those are some weird image artifacts.

I was referring to kronckew's picture (the fullers and the edges of the scabbard look distorted), but I don't object. :D

The suede cover over the original wood scabbard (and its original thin black leather cover, was handstitched in the pattern you see. Where the stitches cross over, they have a bumpy appearance. It's the low resolution auction photo enlarged a bit, so that adds to the illusion. The blade spine is also smooth, tho the grainy photo shadows make it a bit indeterminate like it might be notched - it isn't, your eyes fool you.
The original scabbard inside stops flush with where the stitches end, so there is kinda-like a rain flap the grip inserts into. The curve of the crown stag & the way it's installed fit the hand perfectly and give you a firm and precise edge alignment. I call it 'Godzilla', it's a 15in.AngKhola bladed beast you do not want to make angry. It's a heavy beast, so I imagine it didn't do well on a belt, and needed the baldric - which is a nylon luggage shoulder strap I added. Here are a couple better pics I just took of it tonight: |
Indeed, much better!
