Parang Nabur
6 Attachment(s)
Hi All,
I picked up my Parang Nabur that I won in a auction and I wanted to share it here. The wooden sheath is painted blue with red and it looks like it was put over thread to keep the two halves together. The bands are gold threaded string what sometimes is seen on ikats with old thread. The sword itself is a very sturdy one the Hilt looks and feels like horn with traces of a dark red. The iron guard had I think a gilded layer once in it's life as there are remains from it to be seen in the pictures. The blade is very well made and has a bluing I never saw before at least on the Parang Nabur I have seen here and in museum collections. I would like to know more about this type of Parang and hope someone can share his thoughts about it with me here. |

Hi Martin,
A not bad Beladah Belabang, I like the very nice blade. I don't know if I would be happy with the painted scabbard, it seems to be a much later addition, maybe made by a collector? Also the handle looks like it's painted or it's just a lot of dirt patination. Sadly I was today overbid by a short one in a German auction. I still miss such a sword in my own collection. Hi Detlef,
thank you for your reply, i think the scabbard is original, as i have seen some with a painted sheath in red paint in the same manner at WereldMuseum. Some of them have brass rings arround it, and others cane. But the quality of the blade is really beautiful. |

Like said before, the blade is beautiful. While I've seen red painted scabbards I never have seen them in blue. And I am nearly sure, that the hilt (I think it's wood) is coated by something, could be what some people would call patina, old dirt or a coating of something. I think that the painting of the scabbard isn't original, just my humble opinion. It's a very nice BB and I would be happy to have it in my own collection. Regards, Detlef |

Look at this picture, in down, near the ferrule, the original colour (brown) is seen, the gray colour seem to be a coating of some sort.
