One more koummya
10 Attachment(s)
I bought this IMO rather old koummya. The frontside is covered with thin silver plates partly decorated with red lines. There have originally been fife pyramids, three of them got lost during the past decades. The total length is 425mm. Comments are invited.

How thick is the blade?
Did you check this link? http://vikingsword.com/ethsword/koummya/index.html From what I can see... I would say average example, at best. |

What is the purple material in the patterned front please? |
IMHO, it is a nice old Koumiya from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century.
The fittings are brass and silver, decorated with black and red emaille. I like it! |

You should know, you are our nimcha expert! These koummya were enameled (red, yellow, green, blue). Some of them cheaper were just painted (don't do like me one day I removed the paint by mistake)... http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...imcha+enameled Kubur |
Hi, I am not a koummya expert, but I will try.
The upside: old, nicely decorated, good quality overall and definately not a souvenier, because it shows signs of use (the wear of the "ears" around the ring, re-sharpening of blade). The downside: not one of the original traditional styles, but a mix of different styles with some elements that I do not recognise. For example, the pyramids are a feature taken from the "Chapeau de Genndarme" type. The blade is of reasonable quality, but it is quite thin and little less curved than in older types. Because of all this, I would guess that it is not a 19th c piece, but an early 20th c, but still authentic, well made and nice to look at. |
Thanks for all comments. The silver layers at the front side have been partly loose, so I took some superglew to fix them again. Hope that the purist here are able to accept this...........:o))

I wondered if it was Champleve ? I'm no expert...but if its only paint it rules out that particular querry... I have no idea what the colour scheme was if applied to Khoummya...which was why I asked.... |
