Anyone want to have a go at translating this date ?
I came up with 1902 ad ; but I'm just not sure .

Jens Nordlunde 15th April 2006 04:41 PM

Hi Rick, would it be possible with a better picture and an indication of where you see the year?

About the best I can get for now Jens .
I believe the date is along the bottom of the stamping .

Rick 15th April 2006 08:30 PM

Bump ; added new picture.

Jens Nordlunde 15th April 2006 09:35 PM

Hi Rick, thanks for the better picture, what I see is 1231, which will mean 1816 AD – or around that time.

What is shown over the year? It looks strange, and how about the whole blade.

Afghan Sabre

Hi Jens , thanks ! This is the Afghan sabre and I believe the stamp is supposed to represent the Blue Mosque at Mazar I Sharif . The date seems a little early though .

Hi Jens and Rick

is it 1231 or 1321? I think the numbers are written left to right.

Jeff

Rick 16th April 2006 03:38 AM

Jeff , that would explain my 1902 (approx) date .
Isn't Arabic script read from right to left ?
Then the dates are opposite to that ?

Alam Shah 16th April 2006 03:41 AM

Hi Jeff,

You're correct. In Arabic, it's right to left, but for letters left to right, 1321. :)
The new picture really helps. ;)

(I stand corrected).:o

Rick 16th April 2006 03:47 AM

WOW !!

This is an old sabre then (or at least the blade) . :D

Thank you Alam Shah !

Jeff D 16th April 2006 05:40 AM

Thanks Alam Shah,

I am only basing my numbers on Omligot They say Left to right? http://www.omniglot.com/writing/arabic.htm

Strange?

All the Best
Jeff

Date

To the best of my knowledge, Arabic is read right to left but numbers go left to right so this will be 1321 ( 1903)

Alam Shah 16th April 2006 06:59 AM

Correction...

Oppps! While Arabic letters are written from right-to-left, numbers in Arabic are written from left-to-right. I stand corrected, as OA had pointed out. ;) :o

Rick 16th April 2006 03:41 PM

Okay then ! :D
I thought 1816 was way too early for this sword type .

Thanks to all of you Gentlemen . :)

ariel 16th April 2006 04:02 PM

Yes, it is 1321, or 1903 Gregorian
I use

Can we see the entire sword, please?

Rick 16th April 2006 05:52 PM

Hi Ariel , follow the link provided in post # 6 in this thread . :)

ham 16th April 2006 06:29 PM

The reason for this is that the numerals are added from lowest to highest:

1321 is notation for:

1 + 20 + 300 + 1000 after hijra
