Moro Swords

Those babies do not look like the usual Barongs/Krises/ Kampilans that we all are familiar with from Cato's book.
Is there a proper name for these swords?
By the way, the blades look vaguely "Chinese" to me.

The first one looks more Panay Visayan, but perhaps more recent like WWII? The second one is even more modern but from where I'm not sure. These would not be in Cato's in any case.

That's a live auction; we can't talk about that.

How bizzarre: I looked at that first auction earlier today, and I don't recall it being active. It certainly is now, and I've removed from your post, Ariel.

The second sword is just a sword length gunong. Most gunongs have blades between 3-12 inches, but it seems more recently made ones have gotten longer. That one is probably the longest one I've seen. I've also seen some with D-guards. Not your traditional Moro gunong, but it does look formidable.

I think Zel is spot on. Giant modern interpretation of a gunong. I have a modern gunong with a 2 ft blade. It actually has a very nice blade. Hardened, substantial, with a copper inlay. Ive cut with it, and it did well. Wouldnt be surprised if this one had a decent blade as well.

Yo Style! You're dissing me, bro :D !!! Okay...I'll admit I REALLY didn't know exactly what it was and the hilt looked a bit odd  , but you've got to admit it does sort of look like a long gunong. I'll keep that in mind if I make to Davao this year. Hey...at least I didn't call it a kris variant ;) .

As for the talibong, I'll start a new thread soon with an overview and evaluation. I'll even post pics of it next to some of my old swords for comparison. Shelley finally got back into town after his surgery and finally got to see it today. I didn't think he was going to give it back after twirling it around. He also had that devilish grin on his face while playing with it. I could probably safely say he liked it.

Would be interested in more information about Kaulo weaponry. Ive only seen a couple of pics of kaulo warriors bearing arms, but they were wearing different kind of sword, with a different kind of scabbard. Any references that you can recommend?

its ok zel, just wanted to bust your chops. i've played with a few over the years so i kinda know the sword, i'll tell you more about them next chat. and yes i'm happy you didnt call it a kris variant. and thanks, i look forward to your eval, and possibly pics?

morningstar,
i thought it was a moro sansibar. :):)
just kidding everyone. :):)

i really like the sword and thought of getting it, but was too late in bidding.
the blade profile and hilt really got me excited. it looks fast.

btw, my evaluation of your tenegre is still in process.
i need a cebuano to try it on. :):)
just kidding again.....no disrespect to cebuanos, i was just stating the illongo / cebuano rivalry that has been going on for years.
i really like the weight and movement. it really compliments our/my style.
i'll play with it more and we'll give you a detailed evaluation, along with trophy heads, and an order for purchase. :):)
