Swedish Halfberd from Higgins armoury
 

I had the opportunity to buy some pieces from the John Woodman Higgins Armory Collection.
One on my favorite buying is this Swedish Halfberd said to be late 17 th century.
This halberd was displayed in the midway of the museum ( see pictures)
61.7 cm; 24 ¼ in head
Provenance
Ernst Schmidt, Munich, Germany, 9 December 1930, no. 117.
A similar halberd is preserved in the Livrustkammaren, Stockholm. Alm 1922, p. 151 also I ‘m looking for a scan of this book as I don’t have it.
Any comments on it will be welcome.

Nice piece. And for a good price too. I was considering bidding on it but held off to bid on the sabre halberd.

When previously researching your Swedish halberd I found some other exact examples. I've been digging through the net this morning but can't seem to find them now.

In Sweden we call it halberd m/1697. The shape is stylized in a highly classicist fashion.

That is a good buy Jean luc and a very rare halberd indeed !

Great history
 

They were used during the Great Northern War (1700-1721) during the reign of Sweden's king Charles XII (who Voltaire wrote an admiring biography of). A time for heroes...

Nostalgia
 

Off topic - sorry - but the picture at the top of the thread does call up a lot of nostalgia for and pleasant memories of the old Higgins Armory Museum. A number of items (~5000) were retained and transferred to the Worcester Art Museum where some are presently on display and there are, I understand, long range plans to eventually open a dedicated gallery for the Higgins' collection.
