Does anyone recognize this
I posted it here because I thought I had seen it somewhere here.
I am trying to figure out what it represents. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...62/Bali002.jpg Thanks for any help |
I would say it is Garuda , could be wrong though but I don't think so .... :D
There also seems to be a Naga at the base and Vishnu is the deity that rides on Garuda's shoulders . |
Info:
I agree with Rick. :)

Thanks
I found 2 of these wood carvings today and they are very intricate. So I had to have them http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...62/Bali001.jpg I appreciate the help |
Yeah, that has got to be Garuda, with Vishnu on his back. I think Hanuman (the monkey king in the Ramayana) might have also ridden Garuda, but I could be wrong. Anyway, the rider here isn't a monkey, so it must be Vishnu.

At the very bottom there is also the turtle which (IIRC) the Balinese believe carries the world while swimming through an endless sea .
|
Yes Rick, a turtle and a snake
I have been trying to find info on this specific depiction ie:Standing on a turtle that seems to be fighting with a snake. I have found info on a Tortiose and an Elephant and other references to snakes but i am having a hard time with the Turtle and snake combination. Off I go to try some more |
I believe the Naga lives in the sea .
What you have in these sculptures are the basic tenets of Balinese Hindu mythology . A site on the Hindu religion would most likely be more enlightening than me . :o {Edit} As a matter of fact Alam Shah's link explains it quite nicely . No need for anything further from me on the subject . :D |
Without question Garuda and Narayana (an incarnation of Vishnu).
