cleaning the blade help please

Here's a kindjal coming out of an attic
the blade is rusty, could someone give me a tip to clean the blade without damaging the kofgari..

I think it is ottoman
any idea, provenance, dating is welcome

There is no short-cut to remove the rust around the gold work, just a steady hand, and small pieces of wire wool or emery paper with a lubricant wd40 etc.

Perhaps even cover over the gold-work with some sticky tape cut to shape.

A desktop magnifier with a light may help to get in close to the gold-work.

Regarding the copper fittings - I would just polish with renaissance wax, but others would use Brasso to bring it up bright. It's personal choice.

Bamboo skewers and a little machine oil, and a lot of patience will help as well. good luck!

Do not put the sticky tape directly on coftgari, it may lift it off the blade and you do not want this to happen. Use a thin layer between the tape and coftgari for protection.

paper has special water for hyper fine car bodywork, and many hours of work

Congratulations - very well done !
I am comming a little bit late, nevertheless: also fine pemza powder applied with oil (and soft cloth) is very useful. Gold coftgari could be covered temporarily with wax or lacquer (especially if one is using chemistry, like chelaton III).
