Yataghan for Comments

Hi All,

I found this yataghan at a Kuwaiti auction. At first sight, I thought the scabbard is later but it seems to be old. The construction is similar to Yataghan scabbards, the opening is oval shaped etc.

It have a tughra and a date 1205 hijri and the maker was called Saleh Hadi. The whole sword is 31 inches long.

Very interesting and unusual. Since in the Balkans the yataghan was worn in a special layered sash, suspension rings were not used. To have not one, but two bands with suspension rings is quite bizarre. I am really not sure where this one is from. Could it be from Eastern Anatolia or Syria? Perhaps the decorative pattern on the scabbard can serve as a clue to someone better informed than me.

Regards,
Teodor

Thanks Teodor. I thought Syrian maybe. It is supposed that this yataghan have been in Hijaz (modern day KSA) for a long time... would be interesting if a yataghan have actually seen use by Arabs in Hijaz..

I vote for North Africa: pommel and scabbard.
