Hi Lew,

you are the winner? Congrats!! I was bidding on this one as well also when it don't fit in my collection but the low start price and the beauty of this knife let me bid! :D I think not long ago there was a very similar knife for discussion here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...light=mangbetu

Regards,

Detlef

Hi Detlef

Yes I was the lucky winner. It fits right in with the rest of my African stuff. The hilt seems very ornate as far as the carving. I'm figuring about 1920 or so as far as age?

So it is very good that you are the winner! :D The very nice ivory (?) hilt was what let me bid on it so I agree complete with you about the hilt. I don't have enough understanding about african weapons to give a estimation about the age but when I look to the other thread I have given in my post before I think that you will be correct! Again congrats for this very nice addition to your collection! ;)

Attached one more picture from the ivory hilt.

Detlef

How is the 1920 date reached?
Is there an explanation for the jimping on the tang just below the hilt, it reminds me of those little notches on skean dhub.

Jim

From what I was told the ivory hilted ones were often made to sell or trade to European farmers and or land owners during the 1920-30s. Luc can explain better about this than I.
