Please post your Tuareg daggers
5 Attachment(s)
Hello friends,
I bought this Tuareg dagger knowing that it was made for "those who travel for pleasure". But I really like the form and craftsmanship. I would love to see the "real thing" that was actually carried by these folk. So, does anyone specialize in daggers from these people? Thanks, Steve |

I LIKE THESE TOO :)
THEY ARE WELL MADE AND ATTRACTIVE AND SOME HAVE QUITE A LOT OF REAL SILVER ON THEM I HAVE ALSO SEEN AMBER USED IN THEIR CONSTRUCTION. THE ONE YOU SHOW IS THE MORE COMMON FORM FOUND IN MOROCCO AND I HAVE SEEN 3 SIZES THERE. THERE IS QUITE A LOT OF VARIATION IN TUREG DAGGERS SOME QUITE SIMPLE TO FANCY. THE LARGE EXAMPLE WITH THE CAST BRASS HANDLE AND SCABBARD IS THE TELEK FORM THERE IS A PICTURE OF THE HANDLE OF ANOTHER EXAMPLE. ANOTHER IS A MOROCCAN JAMBAYA BLADE WITH TUAREG HANDLE. THE 3 PICTURES ARE OF A DAGGER SAID TO BE TUAREG AND IT DOES HAVE SOME DESIGN AND WORKMANSHIP BUT I AM NOT SURE IT IS TRULY TUAREG. THE ODD ONE IS SAID TO BE TUREG AND THE SCABBARD DOES LOOK LIKE TUREG WORK. THE PICTURE OF THREE DAGGERS ARE SIMULAR TO YOUR EXAMPLE WITH CARRING STRAPS. A TUAREG WITH CAMEL AND SPEAR. |

I'm not "the" specialist, I came back from 6 years in Sahara with at least ... one old Tuareg dagger - arm dagger "Tedda" (loï bo) from Tibesti (arm bracelet ... missing) 19th century http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/9...pelslobo27.jpg http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9858/...pelslobo28.jpg the second, it's from Niger, but Tuareg also and more recent 20th century http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/9...ppelslobo8.jpg extracted from the fantastic book of Anthony C. Gentlemen,
Thanks so much for your posts. There seems to be a wide variety of these delightful pieces. Your help is much appreciated. Dom, those last two really resemble mine. Steve |
Tuareg knife, Niger
I obtained this knife from a Peace Corps worker who spent over a year with the Tuareg. The knife was a gift to him from the tribe. The blade is 7 3/4 inches and total length 13 inches incl. scabbard.
